{RECIPE} Canada Day Strawberry Puppy Pancakes

Happy Canada Day!  We just finished a delicious Canada Day pancake breakfast here at our place, dogs included (the cat settled for celebratory salmon treats).  I always make pancakes without added sugar (plenty sweet with maple syrup!), so the dogs can enjoy a little puppy pancake with the family on special occasions. My favourite thick and cakey pancakes have many variations, but are usually based on a simple 1:1:1 mix ratio, scaled for the number of hungry humans (and hounds) - i.e. for every 1 cup of self raising flour, use 1 cup wet ingredients and 1 egg.

Canada Day Strawberry Puppy (and People!) Pancakes

🥄 Treat Ingredients:

1 cup self raising flour
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
Sprinkle of ground flax seed (optional)
Approximately 1/4 cup chopped strawberries (fresh or frozen)
Toppings of your choice (optional)

🥄 Making the Treats:

Heat a skillet (can be non-stick or with a small amount of oil/butter) over medium heat. Combine the flour, yogurt, milk, egg, and flaxseed (optional) in a bowl and mix lightly. Add strawberries and stir through. Spoon mixture into the pan. Cook for several minutes, until the bottom is browned, flip, and continue cooking until brown and cooked through. Serve with maple syrup (humans only) or other toppings of your choice - we used yogurt, carob powder and fresh mint.

Tips and Tricks:
  • Cool your dog's puppy pancake prior to serving.
  • You may wish to cut the dog's pancake into small pieces before serving. This is a great way to accelerate cooling, but also prolongs the enjoyment since an uncut little puppy pancake treat is a single mouthful for big eaters!

We share ideas here from treats that we make ourselves for our pets, but different animals will have different preferences (likes/dislikes) and dietary needs.
