{RECIPE} Pumpkin and Lamb Pupcakes

Next in our meaty May collection of savory dog treat recipes are our Pumpkin and Lamb Pupcakes. You can bake this batter as small mini-muffins for big dog pupcakes (as shown), into a special occasion cake, or as a simple slice - just adjust your baking time to suit the style of pupcake.

Pumpkin and Lamb Pupcake Dog Treats

~100g lean lamb mince (or other lean ground meat)
1 egg
1/2 cup pureed cooked pumpkin
2 tbsp turmeric powder + a dash of ground black pepper
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup wholemeal self-raising flour
 1 tbsp cider vinegar
~1/8 cup warm water
Additional flour or water if/as needed to adjust for consistency

Pre-heat oven to 180C.  Combine the lamb and egg in a mixing bowl (stain resistant is best if adding turmeric). Mix in the pumpkin, turmeric, and pepper then add the wheat germ and flour.  Stir in the cider vinegar then incrementally add water to adjust to a thick muffin-batter consistency. Add a little bit more water or additional flour to adjust consistency if needed. spoon into a lightly oiled mini-muffin pan (or other pan of your choice).  Let sit for approximately 5 minutes, then bake at 180C for approximately 12-15 minutes until fully baked.  Allow to cool before storage and serving.

Tips and Tricks:
  • This is a small batch recipe (single mini-muffin pan). The treats can be frozen and these work great for individually defrosting as a special treat.
  • The treats can be broken or cut into smaller pieces for smaller dogs. Even a mini-muffin is pretty big as a single treat - my dogs (excluding the taste test pics of course!) usually get half each.
  • While we typically avoid giving spices to our dogs, turmeric can actually be a healthy spice for dogs in moderation (check out Dogs Naturally, Can I Give My Dog or consult your favourite resource/vet for more information) and humans, too.  My dogs love the smell and seem pretty keen on the taste too - it has become a go-to add-in for many of my homemade savory treats. 
  • You can substitute another lean ground meat or use an alternative type of flour instead of wheat germ and whole wheat to go gluten-free. Tweak the volumes if/as needed for a nice cakey/muffiny consistency.
  • As an easy and healthy timesaver, we like to cube and roast a whole pumpkin/squash and then freeze for easy use in smaller quantities (for both human food and the pets!). If you prefer, you can substitute another dog friendly veggie puree, baby food (always check the label to avoid no-no ingredients such as onion to be dog-safe), or canned pumpkin puree (plain pumpkin, NOT spiced or sweetened pie filling). As liquid content will vary, you may need to play around with the quantities for consistency.
