{RECIPE} Turkey Meatloaf Birthday Layer Cake

Homemade dog birthday cake topped with two edible candle treats

You can easily make a dog-friendly birthday cake using a meatloaf-style dog cake or adapt a doggy pupcake/cupcake recipe, and a layer cake really makes things feel like a special celebration, doesn't it?  Humphrey's birthday cake was made from tasty turkey meatloaf iced in mashed potato frosting sprinkled with homemade dog jerky garnish, topped with edible birthday candle treats (recipe tomorrow). Special indeed!

Turkey Meatloaf Dog-Friendly Birthday Cake (with Frosting and Sprinkles!)

ðŸĨ„ Cake Ingredients:

300g lean ground meat (I used turkey mince)
1 egg
1 cup of finely minced dog-safe vegetables (Humphrey loves carrots. I used rainbow carrots from the garden instead of "normal" orange carrots, so it looks a little funny!)
1/3 cup wheat germ Can substitute for grain/gluten sensitive dogs.

Frosting and decorations:
Cooled mashed potato + water to adjust consistency if/as needed
Small pieces of dog jerky treats to garnish (optional)

Step-by-step making and decorating a meatloaf dog birthday cake

ðŸĨ„ Making and Decorating the Cake:

Preheat your oven to 180C (or local equivalent) and gather together your baking ingredients and materials. Lightly oil your pan(s). These volumes suit two mini spring-form pans (affiliate link).

Process your mixed raw vegetables into a fine mince - a food processor works nicely if you have one.  Combine all the cake ingredients in a mixing bowl and press firmly into your prepared pans. There is no need to leave expansion room as these cakes will not change in size during baking.

Bake for approximately 30 minutes, until cooked thoroughly.  Remove from the oven, cool slightly, and then refrigerate to cool thoroughly.

Remove from the pan(s) and construct your layer cake, applying mashed potato frosting on (or just between you'd like to use less) each layer.  Frost the exterior with additional mashed potato, garnish to decorate (optional) and refrigerate until you are ready to serve. Refrigerate or freeze extra for follow-on treats. Pampered pooches might enjoy their slice of cake warmed slightly before serving for extra smell and flavour.

Tips and Tricks:
  • Cake(s) can be baked in other shapes/sizes. Muffins (or mini-muffins) offer a great single-serve alternative. Remember to adjust cooking times accordingly.
  • Other ground meats can be used based upon your preferences and dog's tastes.
  • The best type of dog-safe vegetables to use will depend on your dog's preferences, but may also be affected by other factors. Some dogs have special dietary requirements, food allergies/intolerances, or breed specific sensitivities - like our Dalmatians, who are safer with lower purine foods due to a breed-unique metabolic issue.  If you have questions or concerns about your pet's diet, chat with your vet.
  • Instant mashed potato is a very quick and easy option for frosting/icing savory dog cakes. It is inherently smooth and uniform in consistency and is easily adjusted to be thinner (additional liquid) or thicker (additional flakes).  Mashed potato is also a neutral base for tinting is you wish to add food colouring.
  • We used homemade dog jerky for garnish, but tinted panko makes a nice sprinkle substitute for special savory dog cakes as does kibble. Garnish is, of course, optional...but fun!
