{RECIPE} Layered Pumpkin and Beef Dog Birthday Cake

Mmmm...cake!  It's not a real party until there's cake!  Our beautiful boy Oli turned 11 this week, and we (of course!) had to celebrate...and that meant there HAD to be a doggone delicious barkday cake!

Layered Pumpkin and Beef Dog Birthday Cake


Approximately 1 cup uncooked lean ground meat (I used beef mince)
1 cup mashed cooked pumpkin 
1 egg
1 tbsp turmeric powder (optional)
sprinkle of ground black pepper (optional)
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
3/4 cup wholemeal self-raising flour Can substitute for grain/gluten sensitive dogs.
Optional: Frosting with cooled mashed potato + milk/water to adjust consistency if/as needed

DIY meatloaf dog birthday cake, step by-step how to make and decorate with mashed potato frosting

Preheat oven to 180C and lightly grease your pan(s). These volumes suit two mini spring-form pans, as shown.  Combine the meat, pumpkin, and egg in a mixing bowl.  Stir in the  turmeric, pepper,a nd vinegar, then add flour and mix until just combined in a thick muffin-like batter. Spoon into your prepared pans, taking care to ensure it is well distributed in the pan.  Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes, until cooked thoroughly.  Remove from the oven, cool in the pans on a rack, and then refrigerate to cool thoroughly.

When thoroughly cooled, remove from the pan.  Construct your layer cake, applying mashed potato frosting between each layer.  You can frost the exterior with additional mashed potato, garnish with tinted panko crumbs or biscuits to decorate if you wish.  Refrigerate until you are ready to serve, and refrigerate or freeze any leftover extras. Pampered pooches might enjoy their slice of cake warmed slightly before serving for extra smell and flavour.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Cake(s) can be baked in other shapes/sizes. Muffins (or mini-muffins) offer a great single-serve  alternative. Remember to adjust cooking times accordingly. Other ground meats can be used based upon your preferences and dog's tastes. 
  • Instant mashed potato is a very quick and easy option for frosting/icing savory dog cakes. It is inherently smooth and uniform in consistency and is easily adjusted to be thinner (additional liquid) or thicker (additional flakes).  Mashed potato is also a neutral base for tinting is you wish to add food colouring.
  • Candles (if used) should be treated with care and are best left unlit around pet(s) for everyone's safety.
