DIY Blue and White Hanukkah Spiral Fleece Dog Tug Toy

Dalmatian dog playing with blue and white fleece tug toy

As promised, it's the bonus bonus post!  We were asked for a blue version of our Howliday tags for Hanukkah and decided to treat you to a Hanukkah tug toy DIY as well. We love our furfriends of all shapes and spots, and it's pawesome when you send us a request to create something special for your holidays and events that we might not be celebrating ourselves. No matter what the reason or season, did you know that blue is a great colour for dog toys?  One of the things we learned while trying to support senior dog Oli with his declining vision is that most dogs see on a spectrum of blue-yellow unlike our human red-blue-green, so blue and/or yellow toys are the dog version of "high-vis" fun!

To make your own twisted double spiral tug, you will need six long strands of fleece.  The toy shown is made using two dark blue, two light blue, and two white.  It is made exactly like our twisted double spiral Valentine dog tug toy, except its a little smaller as I was running low on white fleece in the craft stash and only had some shorter scraps left. :) To economise, instead of tying an all-strand loop knot like I normally use, I use two separate short pieces of dark blue to securely tie the starting/finishing ends. For a little extra flair, the loose "tassle" pieces at the ends were cut with little v-shaped notches.

For full step-by-step DIY instructions, diagrams, and photos of how to weave a twisted fleece double spiral tug, please hop across into our twisted double spiral Valentine tug toy post.

Instructions for dog tug toy made with blue and white fleece

It feels like it's been ages since we share a tug toy DIY, as these durable washable tugs seem to last forever now that Humphrey is no longer a sharp fanged pup and old Oli is more moderated in his tug-of-war ripping, but I had the fleece out for another project and so happy Humphrey has a new tug.  I've been contemplating DIYs for friends who are welcoming puppies in the near future, so there may be more tug posts on the horizon. Woofs!

Safety first, furfriends! Remember, no matter what a toy is made of or how it's made, toys are meant for supervised interactive play. Know your dog before giving him/her any new toy. Some dogs try to eat toys/parts (whether bought or handmade) and that's dangerous. Toys are for playing, and playtime is always safer (and more fun!) with you involved. You can read more on our dog toy safety page, including tips and helpful links for safer playtime. Have fun and play safe!

Looking for more doggone great Hanukkah ideas? Adding a touch of colour to any treat or toy is an easy way to make things a little more festive, or you can keep the toys/treats simple and just add a pop of colour with wrapping. The requested howliday treat/gift tag and label freebies that inspired this tug toy are able in our previous post. Happy Hanukkah to those of you celebrating! We wish you a joy-filled Hanukkah season, filled with light, laughter, family, friends, and fun.
