Getting Started with Making Homemade Dog Treats

If you're wondering whether it's worth the effort or just starting out with making your own treats, you might like to check out our post on Why (and How) to Make Homemade Dog Treats. It shares why we started experimenting with homemade treats, some of the pros and cons to be aware of, different styles of homemade treats, and tips for easier treat making. Many of the treats you see here (and elsewhere) are cute little shapes or decorated, but that's just for fun. Dogs don't care about such things - only the yummy scents and tastes. Treats can be simple, use common ingredients, and kitchen equipment that you likely already have on hand. The links below will take you to our introductory posts on treat making and some of the common categories of homemade treats.

🦴 Remember, treats (bought or homemade) are for spoiling your pup in moderation. We share ideas here from treats that we make ourselves for our pets, but different animals will have different preferences (likes/dislikes) and dietary needs. Some pets may have special dietary requirements and/or food allergies/intolerances. If you are ever in doubt or have questions about what's suitable for your pet, have a chat with your trusted vet.

Blog Favourites | Our Go-To Dog Treats

Although I love experimenting with treat recipes, there are a few go-to favourite homemade dog treats in our own home.  We always have some sort of gelatin gummy dog treats in the fridge - occasionally fancy, but often just a simple diluted broth-based gummy. Easy, very healthy, and our dogs love them. We usually have a jar of small homemade coconut oil dogs treats in the fridge. If you're into supplementing your dogs with coconut oil, setting it turns that supplement into treats. Pawfect!  We usually have one or more varieties of jerky treats on hand as healthy high value treats. Our boys get very excited guarding the dehydrator when it's jerky making time. Cue the drool! Oli's senior dog stroller has been nicknamed "the jerky wagon" as I always carry jerky.

Frozen Dog Treats

As you can probably tell from this blog, I make a variety of different baked treats. There isn't a favourite recipe and there are usually a number of different baked treats in our freezer.  That way, there's always something different available for the ready-use treat jar and a walkies pocket treat bag.  In the warmer months, we also keep frozen pupsicle-style treats at the ready. This is an area where it's easy for anyone to have fun and experiment since it's pretty difficult to mess up a frozen treat.

Like Pavlov's dogs, our dogs perk up at the sound of the coffee machine whirring into action.  My husband has created little puppuccino addicts. Mornings often begin with a healthy breakfast followed by a warm carob 'hot dogolate' (or cold depending on the weather) or frothy milk fluffy. Occasionally, we give keffir or diluted yogurt instead. We give our dogs colostrum to support immunity and general health, (we use a high-quality human grade product) and their morning bevvy is the perfect place to mix in an extra boost of milkiness.

Even in our treat crazy household, we don't make all of our own treats (or food), but I am choosy about what we buy wrt sources and ingredients. Some treats are better made with commercial sources and/or equipment that we current have available, and some are a little to yucky for me (like dehydrated furry deer ears) but our dogs love them! If you think we'd like to taste test your treats or food, feel free to check out our Work (or Play!) with Us page for more information.
