Our old water resistant dog bed covers have worked fantastic, but after several years of hard wear under paws and claws, shuffling around indoors/outdoors, and ferrying through our move, they were rather worn. More important than just looking a bit shabby, the scratched and worn tops had compromised their water resistance. Pretty good durability considering they were made with clearance bin table cloths, though! In addition to the old beds, I also had cutoffs from the making of our window seat and a few other projects that could be put to good use if covered, so dog bed cover making was added to the to-do list. I watched for a great sale and then picked up some durable outdoor fabric for my covers in my go-to shades of grey, black and white, coordinating with the rest of our home.

DIY Water/Pee Resistant Furniture Pads and Dog Bed Toppers
As shared last week, senior dog Oli's increasing issues with bladder leakage have lead to us upping our game on making his favourite places around the house more pee-tolerant so he can continue to enjoy his golden years (pun totally intended...hehe...) in comfort. I spent so much time looking for suitable bed sheets and protectors that Facebook and Google ads started serving me targeted ads for incontinence products. There are some great products out there, but I couldn't find the sizes/shapes I wanted to suit Oli and his nesting places. So I decided to make my own by adapting some simple ready-made products to perfectly sized (and styled) custom water/pee resistant toppers for the sofa and our two non-waterproof dog beds (pretty, but vulnerable).

How to Make DIY Box Cushion Pet Beds...Shortcut!
(Part 3 of 4) Yesterday we showed you our DIY full box cushion pet bed, and this is a shortcut (cheat) semi-box cushion bed with a rear velcro closure
gusset panel. It has boxed front corners, but a plushy wrap-around top
and sides. It is great for squishy beds as the natural curve to the top accommodates the extra loft, and easy cheat for clear
frontal patterns, and efficient use of fabric with limited cuts/waste. I used a separate rear gusset when making these beds, but you can use a single piece of fabric to create the full envelope instead, if you wish (see Tips and Tricks below).

How to Make a DIY Box Cushion (Water-Resistant) Pet Bed
(Part 2 of 4) This red large box cushion floor bed was made by upcycling a clearance sale spill-proof table cloth, which is great for dirty dogs and Oli's occasional leaky wee LBL. Upcycling a quality fabric shower curtain or using exterior fabrics are other options, or you can just use regular sturdy fabric. All totalled, including the insert and assorted supplies, this big water-resistant dog bed cost around NZ$35 (US$24). Bargain!

8 Fun DIY Pet Beds for Nesting and Resting
It is a wet and wild sort of day
here, and the pets are all tucked snuggly into their beds for an
afternoon snooze. Tiger laments having sacrificed his Ikea Bastis cat
bed during our move
and, unable to replace it, he has been skulking around in my wicker
laundry baskets. We have been looking at a refresh of their favourite
nests, and here is a
round up of some of the great DIY pet beds we have discovered while
looking for inspirations. Have you tried one of these or do you have a
DIY of your own to share? Suggestions are most welcome in the comments
or on our Facebook page.
