DIY Monogram Dog Donut Soft Toy with Squeaker

Homemade monogram "H" sprinkle donut birthday stuffed dog toy

Soft toys with squeakers are a very special treat around here. Boy dogs love them, so they are fiercely contested treasures and can be rather short lived in the quest for the all-important squeaker. Since birthdays are a time for special treats, I made a monogram "H" softie for Humphrey's birthday.  Whether it's a donut, eclair, long-john, or just a cute cake, it was by far the favourite toy of the day and is the final post of our special pawty week series.

DIY Birthday Candle Dog Tug Toy

DIY birthday candle woven fleece dog tug toy

Humphrey loves tug toys, so I decided to make him something extra special for his birthday. I hinted that something fun and fleecy was in the works when I shared last Friday's instructions for making a round twist box knot tug toy, which is what gives the body of our candle its diagonal colour banding.

How to Make Dog-Friendly Edible Birthday Candles

Edible spiral coloured dog treat birthday candles

Instead of using normal birthday candles on Humphrey's second birthday cake, I decided to make some edible candle treats instead - safety and tastier!  I usually leave normal candles unlit and remove before cutting to serve, although Oli got to have his photo taken with very briefly lit candles on his recent 10th birthday. Such a good boy! Humphrey isn't yet a patient poser, so I decided to forgo candles altogether and make treats instead.

{RECIPE} Turkey Meatloaf Birthday Layer Cake

Homemade dog birthday cake topped with two edible candle treats

You can easily make a dog-friendly birthday cake using a meatloaf-style dog cake or adapt a doggy pupcake/cupcake recipe, and a layer cake really makes things feel like a special celebration, doesn't it?  Humphrey's birthday cake was made from tasty turkey meatloaf iced in mashed potato frosting sprinkled with homemade dog jerky garnish, topped with edible birthday candle treats (recipe tomorrow). Special indeed!

{RECIPE} Layered Meatloaf Dog Birthday Cake

Homemade meatloaf dog birthday cake with potato frosting and panko sprinkles

No birthday is complete without cake! A layer cake makes things all the more special, especially with fancy frosting and rainbow sprinkles.  We love indulging our beloved senior boy Oli, but in moderation and with healthy (or healthier) ingredients and add-ins where we can. He has always been an inherently voracious eater and maintaining a healthy weight through good diet and plenty of exercise is vital, especially as he grows older. With this in mind, I set out to bake him a birthday cake which was more of a special birthday meal than a treat.

We're sharing a post every day this week for Oli's big birthday bash, starting with this sneak peek at yesterday's pawty (a day early so that the whole family could have fun together).  As always, the guest of honour was happy to pose for a few smiling photos, even in the embarrassing hat, as long as there were treats! Easy DIY Dog Party Cracker

Here is the final share from Humphrey's first birthday! Humphrey enjoys helping with the recycling of all varieties, but he has a particular fondness for toilet paper rolls.  On his birthday, I made two very simple "party cracker" inspired treat tubes (one for each dog - nobody wants a birthday fight!).  These are a fun little novelty to add to a doggy celebration. I may make some for New Year's, too.

{RECIPE} Tasty Turkey Meatloaf Dog Birthday Cake

Our next few posts will share the DIY details from Humphrey's first birthday, and what better place to start than with cake?  This is a party after all, so what not have the cake first! There is something about a nice tall layer cake that really makes it feel like a special celebration, isn't there?  The smell of meat cooking in the kitchen is a really exciting event for our dogs. For personal reasons, I converted to a vegetarian diet some time ago and hubby also limits his consumption, so meat isn't usually on the menu unless we are cooking for guests or (of course) the pampered pets. Since I wanted this cake to be more of an indulgent birthday dinner than a dessert, I opted to make it meaty - much to the joy and delight of my salivating sous-chefs.

Humphrey's First Birthday (Sneak Peek)

Our baby is (almost) all grown up! Humphrey celebrated his first birthday in style last week, along with his adopted "brothers", Oli (who has done a great job of mentoring and tolerating a puppy!) and Tiger (with whom he has reached a cautious truce). It is hard to believe that he was ever quite this small:
