{RECIPE} Cucumber Salmon Dog Treats

Homemade cucumber and salmon baked dog treats shaped like bones

These homemade dog treats are based on the classic combination of salmon and cucumber, and get a bonus boost of naturally green colour from spirulina powder, just for fun. They'd be just as doggone delicious in their natural greige colour, but I couldn't resist going green for the cucumber treats.

These homemade St. Patrick's Day dog treats are made using one batch of dough that has been split, naturally tinted in shades of green and gold, and then marbled together before cutting into treats for baking. Check out the details below on how to make you own special treats for lucky furfriends.

Dalmatian Spotted Dog Treats (Just for Fun!)

Homemade baked Dalmatian shaped dog treats with black spots

It was only a matter of time... Ever since buying my "Dalmatian" (Retriever) shaped cookie cutter, Dalmatian spotted dough has been on my mind. I've made chocolate labs with carob dough, golden labs with peanut butter dough (a favourite), speckled dogs with bacon (mmm....bacon...), and more. Instead of marbling a treat dough, I decided to play with black chia seeds on a pale treat dough base as a very simple way to create small Dalmatian dotted treats.

Hand Stamped Valentine's Day Jigsaw Puzzle Dog Treats

Stamped Valentine's Day jigsaw puzzle piece homemade dog treats

With Valentine's Day coming up and Puzzle Day later this week ( I love these crazy days), today's post is a cute DIY decorating idea for homemade dog treats. Stamping is one of my favourite ways to dress up a treat, and it's an easy way to make cute treats without adding icings or glazes that require extra time/ingredients and may affect the portability, storage, and/or shelf life of the treats. They look fancy, but stamped designs can be deceptively easy to make (and fun).

Happy almost howlidays, furfriends! Today's post shows how to bake a segmented bar of homemade dog biscuit/cookie style treats as well as a fun option for wrapping little DIY dog treat gift bars for presents.

Thank you for all the love you've shown to Oli and Humphrey this year, your kind words of condolence when our elderly cat, Tiger, passed away, and the support you've given to us and our Dalmatian DIY blog, especially when we took the leap of transitioning to our own domain. Happy holiday wishes and may your 2020 be filled with health and happiness. ~Laura, Oli, and Humphrey

{RECIPE} Spirulina Sour Cream Christmas Dog Treats

Homemade naturally green Christmas tree and bone dog treats

O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree, how yummy are thy branches... These tasty dog treats get the naturally deep green colour from spirulina powder. I used my Christmas tree plunger cutter to make the decorated trees, but a normal Christmas tree cookie cutter (or other shape of your preference) would work great with this green dough as well.

{RECIPE} Peanut Butter Banana and Carob Christmas Treats

One month until Christmas, furfriends! In prepping our holiday posts this year, I couldn't resist experimenting with a few plunger cookie cutter recipes so I could play with my Christmas plungers, but this dough works well with standard cutters or as a simple ball-and-flatten treat. This dense fudgey dough worked great for cutting, and the dogs loved the irresistible combination of banana, peanut butter, and carob. Drool!

{RECIPE} Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog (Trick or) Treats

Mmmm....pumpkin! Harvest is here for our northern furfriends and with it the silly season of all things pumpkin (and pumpkin spice), but here in New Zealand we like to enjoy pumpkin all year round. Pumpkin is delicious and nutritious, and we like to keep some cooked cubed pumpkin on hand in the freezer for quick and convenient use in baking/cooking for both humans and dogs.

Our current FAQs, Tips, and Troubleshooting mini-series is all about DIY dog treats and today we're talking about decorating homemade dog treats. Homemade Baked Biscuit (Cookie) Dog Treats

Our current FAQs, Tips, and Troubleshooting mini-series is all about DIY dog treats, and we had so many delicious things to share that we extended the mini-series into this week so that baked biscuit (cookie) dog treats could get the extra special treatment (sorry...couldn't help myself!) this category of homemade dog treats deserve as one of the most popular and varied types of treats. Today's post is an introduction to making biscuit treats, and then we'll look at shelf-life/storage and decorating in their own dedicated posts to wrap up the mini-series.

{RECIPE} Fish Bone Dog Treats (Made with Fresh Fish)

Homemade bone shaped dog treats and party hats at dog birthday party.

When I make fish treats, I usually use a water-packed tinned fish for dough and fresh fish for special treats like jerky, but since I already had a fishy food processor to clean and more fish than was needed for the surf layer of the Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake, I decided to experiment. When I use meat/fish in baked treats, it's also usually already in ready to serve form, whether tinned or precooked and chopped, so I adjusted my baking methods somewhat for these treats to cook a little longer and slower than my usual quick bake and (optional) dehydrate.

{RECIPE} Cream Cheese Chicken Dog Treats

Dalmatian dog staring at a bone shaped green dog treat

These treats combine the irresistible flavours of grilled chicken and tangy cream cheese with tasty herbs, and use healthy add-ins to make a naturally green treat - just because! They are perfectly yummy au natural, but cream cheese dough is great for tinting and I felt like playing. As we were pre-prepping our St. Patrick's Day posts at the time, I went for green, but this dough would also make a great base for other tints. I may try a pretty pink beetroot powder adaptation next time!

{RECIPE} Naturally Pink Strawberry Cheesecake Dog Treats

Pink heart and bone shaped Valentine's Day dog treats on a polka dot background

We're back from our holiday blogging break and hopping straight into the goodies with our Valentine's Day post line up, and it's a berry-based treat for my berry-loving boys. May we all be as lucky to find a Valentine who looks at us with as much love and desire as Oli eyeing up a strawberry (or strawberry treat)! Haha! Look at this face:

{RECIPE} Strawberry Carob Christmas Spice Dog Treats

Christmas dog treats shaped like bones, trees, gingerbread men, and snowmen

In confession, I simply couldn't resist pulling out the plunger cookie cutters to make a few final holiday treats.  My go-to carob powder smells a lot like cocoa powder to my underpowdered human nose, but in flavour  it's subtly sweet, a little nutty, and sort of reminds me of gingerbread. (I've tried it in human baking....not taste-testing dog treats, although I've been tempted! Hehe...) With spice and all things nice on the brain, I adapted our strawberry carob recipe to make a treat spiced up with a hint of cinnamon, ginger, and the rich scent of blackstrap molasses. Cue the drool!

{RECIPE} Berry Bacon Barkmas Bone Dog Treats

Dalmatian dog begging for a pink bone shaped dog treat

Berry bacon barkmas bones...say that 10 times fast! :) These treats combine yummy strawberry (a dog favourite around here) with the irresistible scent/taste of bacon. Strawberries are in season during our Christmas holidays; however, frozen berries are fine for baking treats any time of year.  Any treat that gets crazy googly eyes from our beloved old Oli makes all the baking effort worthwhile!

{RECIPE} Merry Fishmas! Naturally Green Sardine Dog Treats

Green dog treats shaped like bones and Christmas trees on red and black polka dot napkins

It's beginning to smell a lot like Fishmas, everywhere you go... Oh my!  Super stinky and delicious, fishy treats are particularly irresistible to our boys. These are delicious and nutritious, with an all-natural green tint for an extra festive touch.  Pawfect for very good boys (or girls)! Woofs!

{RECIPE} Cranberry Chicken Christmas Cookie Dog Treats

Bowl of red dog treats on a green and white polka dot napkin

Mmmm...the holidays are so close we can almost taste them! It's one month until Christmas, and here's the first of our barkmas-themed posts for this year. Woofs! As blog dogs, our boys taste test holiday and special occasion treats well before the calendar (they never complain!) and if you are currently swimming in leftover turkey, dry turkey meat would make a great substitute for the cooked chicken in this recipe. You can bake and freeze your treats or (like often do, and as was used in these treats) freeze some small batches of cooked meat for future use. Winner winner, chicken dinner!

Frankenbone Homemade Halloween Dog Treat Decorations

Halloween isn't really a done thing down here in New Zealand, but we'll take any excuse for a treat of two! Last year's mummy bone dog treats were one of my favourite treats to create and decorate (definitely something I would do again). These Frankenbones simplify monster treat decorating for a fast way to make a fun batch of treats and it's easy enough for the kids to help with making special Howl-oween dog treats for their furry friends.
