{RECIPE} Spirulina Sour Cream Christmas Dog Treats

O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree, how yummy are thy branches... These tasty dog treats get the naturally deep green colour from spirulina powder. I used my Christmas tree plunger cutter to make the decorated trees, but a normal Christmas tree cookie cutter (or other shape of your preference) would work great with this green dough as well.

{RECIPE} Stained Glass Yogurt Gummy Easter Dog Treats

Dalmatian dog staring at a colourful gelatin gummy dog treat

Anyone else remember stained glass Jell-o jigglers from childhood? Here's my dogified version made with yummy yogurt, healthy gelatin, and colourful add-ins. Because I simply can't resist doing these crazy things. Haha!  The dogs totally don't care about the colours, but they do love gummies!

{RECIPE} Dehydrated Cottage Cheese Dog Treats / Toppers

Seasoned dehydrated cottage cheese in a jar

This simple treat idea can be as basic as a single-ingredient or as fancy as you'd like with optional add-in ingredients. Our dogs LOVE cottage cheese and it's a nutritious lower purine goody (see our notes at the end of the post on purines) that I happily share by small spoonfuls or let them help clean out the empty container. Unfortunately, it's something that's often quite expensive here and has a short fridge life. So how to take advantage of those sales? Hmmm. Freezing is one way to extend the storage, but after experimenting with the dehydrator, crunchy little nuggets of dehydrated cottage cheese have fast become a doggy favourite! Humans might also enjoy them as well.

{RECIPE} Bone Brothsicles Frozen Dog Treats

Bowl of frozen dog treats with bone broth and yogurt on a polka dot napkin

It's officially autumn here in NZ (although I'm hanging onto summer until the equinox!) and this past summer has been a scorcher! Perfect weather for cool yummy gummies and frozen treats. These brothsicles were created along with a batch of bone broth gummy treats (stay tuned for next week's post) when a batch of bone broth didn't set on its own for gelled storage and serving. It was a sizzling summer day, so instead of just freezing it into broth cubes, I decided to stretch it out with a broth ice cream treat and a batch of yummy gummies.

{RECIPE} Cream Cheese Chicken Dog Treats

Dalmatian dog staring at a bone shaped green dog treat

These treats combine the irresistible flavours of grilled chicken and tangy cream cheese with tasty herbs, and use healthy add-ins to make a naturally green treat - just because! They are perfectly yummy au natural, but cream cheese dough is great for tinting and I felt like playing. As we were pre-prepping our St. Patrick's Day posts at the time, I went for green, but this dough would also make a great base for other tints. I may try a pretty pink beetroot powder adaptation next time!

{RECIPE} Pumpkin Spice Latte Gummy Dog Treats

Dalmatian dogs begging for a bone shaped dog treat

It is springtime here in New Zealand, but every September our social media feeds still fill up with the tempting allure of pumpkin spice everything. Kiwis love cooking with pumpkin pretty much all year round and our dogs LOVE pumpkin, so I thought, why not create a PSL inspired gummy?

{RECIPE} Apple Pie Pupsicle Frozen Yogurt Dog Treats

Bowl of bone shaped frozen yogurt dog treats on a blue table

These easy three-ingredient apple pie frozen yogurt dog treats are doggone delicious!  It's not pupsicle weather here at the moment (brrr....winter!), but the blog dogs have been busy for months pre-prepping and taste testing (such a difficult duty!) treats so that we can keep the blog active through the chaos of moving prep, relocation, and settling into a new home.  And June is Dairy Month, so we're kicking off with a yummy yogurt treat. These frozen treats were a summertime hit at our place and are super simple to make! Soak up some sunshine for us, nothern furfriends!

{RECIPE} "Kitchen Sink" Super Puppy Patty Dog Treats

Drawstring bags of orange dog treats on a wooden table

These dog treats are packed with doggone delicious flavours and boosted with healthy ingredients, including some dog-friendly super foods.  Unlike many of our treats, these super food puppy patties include a wide variety of ingredients, hence the kitchen sink nickname. :)  Not to worry; however, as you can also easily customise the recipe to adjust quantities or make substitutions to suit your preferences and your dog's tastes.

{RECIPE} Pumpkin + Peanut Butter Cake with Yogurt Frosting

Dog party buffet table with birthday cake and treats

It's not really a birthday party without a cake, is it? In the words of Julia Child, "a party without cake is just a meeting." and while we do enjoy meetings with doggone delicious snacks, barkday parties with dog-friendly cakes are far superior. :)  Our dog birthday cakes are usually meatloaf-style creations, but for Oli's barkday pawty this year I decided to make meatballs as a side and bake a "real" cake instead.

{RECIPE} Blackberry Cheesecake Dog Treats

Homemade pink dog treats shaped like bones and hearts

Old boy Oli is an absolute fiend for blackberries. Our berry patch is in a gated area, but when the gates are open whilst I'm working in the garden, Oli is sure to arrive like a berry seeking bear bumbling his way into the bird netting hoping for a tasty nibble. Since antioxidants are a big part of our efforts to give Oli happy healthy golden years, his berry love is something we happily indulge in moderation. Blackberries are a powerhouse of free radical fighting antioxidants along with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Blackberries are also a vibrant dark purple-red inside their inky drupelets, and the messy stains on my berry picking fingers inspired me to use that natural colouring to create these Valentine treats.  Beetroot is usually my pink go-to, but Oli was very pleased to see blackberries on the menu. And with the irresistible tang of cream cheese? Drool!

{RECIPE} Sardine and Cheese Dog Treats (Naturally Pink!)

Pink bone shaped homemade dog treats

With the chaos and fun of Christmas behind us, it's time for us to start our Valentine's posts, yay! Feel the love, furfriends!  Nothing says love to our boys quite like something super stinky and delicious, and fishy treats are particularly irresistible. Sardines puree to a not-so-appetising greige colour, so these treats get an all-natural colour boost from beetroot powder.  Delicious and nutritious!

{RECIPE} Naturally Golden Turmeric Star Dog Treats

Dalmatian dog begging for star shaped homemade dog treat

Turmeric powder gives these sour cream and chicken treats a gorgeous all-natural golden colour (perfect for stars) and adds some doggone great smell/taste to the mix as well. My dogs love turmeric (cue the drool) which make me pretty happy too since it's full of healthy goodness - especially for our ageing senior.

{RECIPE} "Jelly Tip" Carob and Yogurt Gummy Dog Treats

These doggone delicious treats were inspired by the classic kiwi Jelly Tip ice cream treats. For our furfriends overseas, Jelly Tips are an ice cream cream stick treat of vanilla ice cream topped with raspberry jelly (the jelly tip) and coated in chocolate, and have been made by local manufacturers Tip Top since 1951. It's a kiwi icon!  I've been wanting to share a carob gummy recipe with you for a while and simply couldn't get my brain past the combination of chocolate and rosy red jelly. And really...can you blame me? So let's dogify it!

Our Go-To DIY Dog Treat Recipes: Puppuccinos

DIY puppuccino and carob hot chocolate for dogs in small bowls on a table with ingredients

Make it in May!  Today's easy homemade favourite started as an occasional indulgence on chilly weekend mornings - puppuccinos! Pavlov's Oli quickly developed a love for the sound of the coffee maker, and those puppy dog eyes are just so doggone hard to resist.  Whether it is a simple fluffy, a carob "hot dogolate", or something a tad fancier, whipping up a puppuccino-style treat has become a frequent part of our family coffee ritual.

{RECIPE} Yogurt Gelatin Healthy Heart Gummy Dog Treats

Homemade yogurt and gelatin dog treats, heat-shaped, on a red and black background

These little hearts are so easy and our dogs LOVE them.  Made in two steps to protect the probiotic content of the yogurt, these gummies are quick healthy treats that you can feel good about sharing with your dog... even literally if you'd like to sample! I'm not into eating gelatin myself, but it's great for humans as well as dogs. When made with plain yogurt, these gummies are naturally a creamy white. The mixture can also be tinted with compatibly flavoured natural colourings (or a dog-safe food colouring) before pouring the prepared gelatin mixture into your molds, if you wish.
