{RECIPE} Coconut Spice Beef Jerky Dog Treats

Homemade coconut beef jerky dog treats

Mmmm....jerky! Of all the (many) treats we make, jerky is one of the easiest and healthiest, and our dogs absolutely love it.  There is absolutely no need to marinate (straight-up jerky is our go-to meaty dog treat), but variety is the spice of life!  This coconut beef jerky is one of our "What would Oli do?" creations, combining some of his favourite scents/flavours with the always irresistible base of beef for a doggone delicious jerky treat.

{RECIPE} Strawberry Mint Chicken Jerky Dog Treats

Chicken jerky dog treats in a bowl on polka dot napkins

We've been DIYing a lot recently, so here is something tasty to break things up on the blog! Mmmm...jerky! Jerky is doggone irresistible to our boys, no matter what the flavour.  Homemade dog jerky is very easy to make it is a great healthy treat option. There is absolutely no need to marinate at all - straight up plain jerky (usually beef) is our go-to meaty dog treat, but experimenting with marinades can be a fun sometimes as well. I've been trying to channel "What would Oli do?" inspiration on treats recently, and this jerky combines chicken with strawberries, which are one of his favourite fruits. You've got to be very quick to beat the dogs to a berry in our garden!

{RECIPE} Crunchy Dehydrated Fish Jerky Dog Treats

Copper bowl filled with homemade dehydrated fish jerky dog treats

Stinky fishes? Oli and Humphrey's favourite dishes! So delicious! Fish treats are very attractive high-value goodies for our boys, and homemade dehydrated fish treats take the drool factor to the max. I'm a-ok tasty treats being a little smelly since fish are nutritious and delicious, plus there are numerous low(er) purine lean fish options, which is great for moderating purines for our Dalmatians.

{RECIPE} Dehydrated Cottage Cheese Dog Treats / Toppers

Seasoned dehydrated cottage cheese in a jar

This simple treat idea can be as basic as a single-ingredient or as fancy as you'd like with optional add-in ingredients. Our dogs LOVE cottage cheese and it's a nutritious lower purine goody (see our notes at the end of the post on purines) that I happily share by small spoonfuls or let them help clean out the empty container. Unfortunately, it's something that's often quite expensive here and has a short fridge life. So how to take advantage of those sales? Hmmm. Freezing is one way to extend the storage, but after experimenting with the dehydrator, crunchy little nuggets of dehydrated cottage cheese have fast become a doggy favourite! Humans might also enjoy them as well.

Jerky is doggone irresistible to our boys, no matter what the flavour.  It's also one of the very few homemade goodies that our cranky old senior cat, Tiger, is interested in sampling. The dogs will very grudgingly share...hehehe.  Homemade dog jerky is very easy to make it is a great healthy treat option. There is absolutely no need to marinate at all - plain delicious jerky is our go-to meaty dog treat - but as we noted in last week's jerky post, by reader request we've created two quick and easy marinade ideas. Last week we shared our rosemary and ginger marinade and now here are the delicious details on our barbecue inspired blackstrap marinade.

Our Go-To DIY Dog Treat Recipes: Simple DIY Jerky for Dogs

Make it in May!  We're kicking off the month with a special post series on our personal go-to dog treats plus simple easy treats (and shortcuts) for healthy homemade fun.  When I tell people that I make most of our dogs treats, they often assume (1) I'm crazy (2) I have way too much time on my hands (3) our dogs are spoiled. In honesty, they're probably right, but it is incredibly affordable, healthy, and quick to make your own dog treats.  As much as I love baking and sharing cute treats here on the blog and with our dogs, the simplest things are still go-tos in our household. What treat do our dogs love best?  No question about it, it's plain and simple jerky.

This month's Monday recipes are all about the meat! Our recipe shares are often a mix of fruits, veggies, dairy, grains, and other doggone delicious ingredients; however, meat is a very important part of our dog's daily diet - even if it isn't part of mine.  Today's meat treat is very simple and one we make on a regular basis - jerky. Our dog-friendly jerky has no added salt, preservatives, or mystery ingredients. Just plain high-quality meat.
