Our current FAQs, Tips, and Troubleshooting mini-series is all about treats. We'll be diving into homemade cookie/biscuit dog treats when the mini-series resumes next week, but first we're talking cakes and pupcakes. Yum!

{RECIPE} Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake with Potato Frosting

Homemade dog birthday cake with frosting, sprinkles, and candles.

The dogs were beyond excited with all of the smells whilst this birthday cake was being prepared, but be forewarned that you may want to have the windows open, weather permitting! Haha! And don't get me started on the fridge after I made the error of popping the finished cake uncovered into the fridge temporarily.

Oli's 13th Birthday (Plus Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake!)

Elderly Dalmatian dog wearing a "Happy Birthday" bandana

Wowzas! Our beautiful boy is 13!  Thanks for all the social media love and birthday wishes you've shared with Oli for his birthday. We're always grateful to celebrate another milestone together, but after Oli's medical emergency last year and Tiger's recent passing, we've been feeling extra mindful and thankful this time around.  Now that our little blogging breaktime for Easter celebrations and ANZAC Day commemorations is past, we're back with photos from Oli's barkday and the details on our latest crazy cake: a doggone droolworthy surf'n'turf layer cake!

Humphrey's 4th Birthday + Layered Lambcake Recipe

Meatloaf dog birthday cake with potato frosting, cranberry decorations, and candles

Woohoo!  Handsome Humphrey is four and all grown up. Where does the time go?  Did you see the impatient posers in my latest "milestone mugshot" snap?  Oh those rascals!  Sigh. Our Facebook furfriends and Instagram pawpals got a sneak peak at Humphrey's 4th barkday in last week's posts as we we took a month offline here on the blog to focus on recovery following Oli's health scare. And now, thankfully the whole furfamily is still together and we're back on the blog. And we have CAKE!

{RECIPE} Pumpkin + Peanut Butter Cake with Yogurt Frosting

Dog party buffet table with birthday cake and treats

It's not really a birthday party without a cake, is it? In the words of Julia Child, "a party without cake is just a meeting." and while we do enjoy meetings with doggone delicious snacks, barkday parties with dog-friendly cakes are far superior. :)  Our dog birthday cakes are usually meatloaf-style creations, but for Oli's barkday pawty this year I decided to make meatballs as a side and bake a "real" cake instead.

Homemade layered meatloaf dog birthday cake with number 11 birthday candles

Mmmm...cake!  It's not a real party until there's cake!  Our beautiful boy Oli turned 11 this week, and we (of course!) had to celebrate...and that meant there HAD to be a doggone delicious barkday cake!

{RECIPE} Turkey Meatloaf Birthday Layer Cake

Homemade dog birthday cake topped with two edible candle treats

You can easily make a dog-friendly birthday cake using a meatloaf-style dog cake or adapt a doggy pupcake/cupcake recipe, and a layer cake really makes things feel like a special celebration, doesn't it?  Humphrey's birthday cake was made from tasty turkey meatloaf iced in mashed potato frosting sprinkled with homemade dog jerky garnish, topped with edible birthday candle treats (recipe tomorrow). Special indeed!

{RECIPE} Layered Meatloaf Dog Birthday Cake

Homemade meatloaf dog birthday cake with potato frosting and panko sprinkles

No birthday is complete without cake! A layer cake makes things all the more special, especially with fancy frosting and rainbow sprinkles.  We love indulging our beloved senior boy Oli, but in moderation and with healthy (or healthier) ingredients and add-ins where we can. He has always been an inherently voracious eater and maintaining a healthy weight through good diet and plenty of exercise is vital, especially as he grows older. With this in mind, I set out to bake him a birthday cake which was more of a special birthday meal than a treat.

{RECIPE} Tasty Turkey Meatloaf Dog Birthday Cake

Our next few posts will share the DIY details from Humphrey's first birthday, and what better place to start than with cake?  This is a party after all, so what not have the cake first! There is something about a nice tall layer cake that really makes it feel like a special celebration, isn't there?  The smell of meat cooking in the kitchen is a really exciting event for our dogs. For personal reasons, I converted to a vegetarian diet some time ago and hubby also limits his consumption, so meat isn't usually on the menu unless we are cooking for guests or (of course) the pampered pets. Since I wanted this cake to be more of an indulgent birthday dinner than a dessert, I opted to make it meaty - much to the joy and delight of my salivating sous-chefs.
