{RECIPE} Calming Chamomile Gelatin Gummy Dog Treats

Chamomile gelatin gummy treats for dogs shaped like paws and bones

Keep calm and snack on! I've been meaning to post this recipe ever since chatting with an Instagram furfriend about their pet's travel stress, and with Guy Fawkes fireworks imminent (call us party poopers, but we hate it!) it seemed like a great time to post about calming chamomile. These gummies are a simple way to make chamomile tea more palatable and (if needed for travel) portable by infusing it into yummy gelatin gummy dog treats.

{RECIPE} Pumpkin Gelatin Gummy Dog Treats

Small bowl and napkins on a wooden table with homemade pumpkin gelatin gummy dog treats shaped like paws and bones

We love experimenting with interesting treat recipes and playing fun little shapes, designs, layers, and other decorations; however, quick, simple, and wholesome is still a go-to for treat making even in our treat crazy kitchen. The dogs don't care about looks, just deliciousness! We usually have a batch of simple gummies in the fridge all the time, either made with simple stock or boosted with spices/herbs, and occasionally I'll include fruits or veggies as well.

Using Homemade Bone Broth and Gelatin in Gummy Treats

Bone and paw shaped bone broth gelatin gummy dog treats

As shared last week, when life hands us not-so-jelly bone broth, we make treats!  Bone broth is something with which I have a love-hate relationship. I love the potential health benefits for our pets, but hate actually making it. That's actually how my love affair with using high-quality gelatin powder for quick, convenient, healthy gummy dog treats came about in the first place.

"Gold Dust" St. Patrick's Day Gelatin Gummy Dog Treats

This little gummy is a just-for-fun adaptation of our simple green gummy treats that takes advantage of the way turmeric powder tends to partially settle in gummy treats to create a dusting of golden flecks.

{RECIPE} Simple Spirulina Gelatin Gummy Dog Treats

Close up of a paw shaped spirulina gelatin gummy dog treat

Simple gelatin gummies are a great way to include super-food spirulina in our doggy diet. They're easy to make, mess-free to serve, and make it a snap to share nutrient-dense spirulina in small quantities. No muss, no fuss. Plus, they look pretty cool as well thanks to the gorgeous natural blue-green of spirulina. Unlike my experiments with using spirulina as a tint in baked treats, the colour shines bright and beautiful in a gummy suspension.

{RECIPE} Pumpkin Pie Gelatin Gummy Dog Treats

Hand holding a layered paw shaped gelatin gummy dog treat over a table of treats

These treats smelled soooo good! Ridiculously good. I almost convinced hubby to taste one. :) I probably would have myself to be honest, but being vegetarian I'm not into eating gelatin.  I liked working with pumpkin in gelatin for our Pumpkin Spice Latte Gummies, and decided to play around with a fancy variation to create a special pumpkin pie inspired gummy.  The results? Doggone droolworthy!

{RECIPE} Peanut Butter Gummy Dog Treats

Dog treats shaped like paws and bones

Mmm...peanut butter!  That smell is so doggone irresistible!  When I first tried to use peanut butter in a gummy treat, it didn't work out quite as smoothly as I had hoped.  Peanut butter can be tricky to melt uniformly into a water-based gelatin mixture. Peanut butter is already an emulsion, and the usual emulsifier melting points are warmer than the ideal heating point for gelatin gummy making (overheating reduces the setting strength). So I put my human cooking knowledge and nerdy skills to use on a revised method. These treats split the prepwork, making it easy to create a nice uniform peanut butter gelatin mix that sets beautifully.  Yay!  Here's how they're made:

It is early winter here, and autumn harvest time had cranberry on my mind (and in my freezer...mooohahah). Thanksgiving isn't celebrated here, but these would be doggone delish for a special Thanksgiving doggy treat.  They were also a great opportunity for me to put my "suspended solids" gummy experiments to the test with a combination of chunky berry puree and light floating herbs - details below on how to beat the sinking/floating problem that often plagues non-soluble add-ins during gummy making!  Woohoo!
