{RECIPE} Coconut Spice Beef Jerky Dog Treats

Homemade coconut beef jerky dog treats

Mmmm....jerky! Of all the (many) treats we make, jerky is one of the easiest and healthiest, and our dogs absolutely love it.  There is absolutely no need to marinate (straight-up jerky is our go-to meaty dog treat), but variety is the spice of life!  This coconut beef jerky is one of our "What would Oli do?" creations, combining some of his favourite scents/flavours with the always irresistible base of beef for a doggone delicious jerky treat.

{RECIPE} Beef and Carrot Meatball Puppy Party Snacks

Homemade meatball dog treats on a birthday party buffet table

I have a tendency to go a bit (just a wee little bit...) overboard on birthdays. Haha! My package of beef was bigger than needed for the turf layer of the Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake and I already had pre-cooked ground beef on hand in the freezer so in an effort to be slightly practical, I baked dog-friendly meatballs with the extra beef instead.  Meatballs are quick to make, easy to handle/serve, freezer friendly, and can be defrosted as individual extra special treats or used to top/crumble onto food. Since carrots are Humphrey's favourite veggie, I included some grated carrot in his birthday meatball mix.

{RECIPE} Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake with Potato Frosting

Homemade dog birthday cake with frosting, sprinkles, and candles.

The dogs were beyond excited with all of the smells whilst this birthday cake was being prepared, but be forewarned that you may want to have the windows open, weather permitting! Haha! And don't get me started on the fridge after I made the error of popping the finished cake uncovered into the fridge temporarily.

{RECIPE} Strawberry Mint Chicken Jerky Dog Treats

Chicken jerky dog treats in a bowl on polka dot napkins

We've been DIYing a lot recently, so here is something tasty to break things up on the blog! Mmmm...jerky! Jerky is doggone irresistible to our boys, no matter what the flavour.  Homemade dog jerky is very easy to make it is a great healthy treat option. There is absolutely no need to marinate at all - straight up plain jerky (usually beef) is our go-to meaty dog treat, but experimenting with marinades can be a fun sometimes as well. I've been trying to channel "What would Oli do?" inspiration on treats recently, and this jerky combines chicken with strawberries, which are one of his favourite fruits. You've got to be very quick to beat the dogs to a berry in our garden!

FAQs, Tips, and Troubleshooting: Broth/Stock for Dog Treats

Frozen cubes of healthy homemade broth/stock for making dog treats

When we share a treat recipe idea that's made with broth (or the option of broth), we say to use an unseasoned low-sodium broth or stock. Tricky indeed as this is almost impossible to find if looking for a ready-to-use product. We're often asked what kind of broth we use when making treats, but there are no special recommendations or secret recipes in reply. We make (or save) our own. It's easy, healthy, and free! Pawfect!

Oli's 13th Birthday (Plus Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake!)

Elderly Dalmatian dog wearing a "Happy Birthday" bandana

Wowzas! Our beautiful boy is 13!  Thanks for all the social media love and birthday wishes you've shared with Oli for his birthday. We're always grateful to celebrate another milestone together, but after Oli's medical emergency last year and Tiger's recent passing, we've been feeling extra mindful and thankful this time around.  Now that our little blogging breaktime for Easter celebrations and ANZAC Day commemorations is past, we're back with photos from Oli's barkday and the details on our latest crazy cake: a doggone droolworthy surf'n'turf layer cake!

{RECIPE} Cream Cheese Chicken Dog Treats

Dalmatian dog staring at a bone shaped green dog treat

These treats combine the irresistible flavours of grilled chicken and tangy cream cheese with tasty herbs, and use healthy add-ins to make a naturally green treat - just because! They are perfectly yummy au natural, but cream cheese dough is great for tinting and I felt like playing. As we were pre-prepping our St. Patrick's Day posts at the time, I went for green, but this dough would also make a great base for other tints. I may try a pretty pink beetroot powder adaptation next time!

{RECIPE} Berry Bacon Barkmas Bone Dog Treats

Dalmatian dog begging for a pink bone shaped dog treat

Berry bacon barkmas bones...say that 10 times fast! :) These treats combine yummy strawberry (a dog favourite around here) with the irresistible scent/taste of bacon. Strawberries are in season during our Christmas holidays; however, frozen berries are fine for baking treats any time of year.  Any treat that gets crazy googly eyes from our beloved old Oli makes all the baking effort worthwhile!

{RECIPE} Cranberry Chicken Christmas Cookie Dog Treats

Bowl of red dog treats on a green and white polka dot napkin

Mmmm...the holidays are so close we can almost taste them! It's one month until Christmas, and here's the first of our barkmas-themed posts for this year. Woofs! As blog dogs, our boys taste test holiday and special occasion treats well before the calendar (they never complain!) and if you are currently swimming in leftover turkey, dry turkey meat would make a great substitute for the cooked chicken in this recipe. You can bake and freeze your treats or (like often do, and as was used in these treats) freeze some small batches of cooked meat for future use. Winner winner, chicken dinner!

{RECIPE} Marinated Blackstrap Beef Jerky Dog Treats

Dalmatian dog begging for a strip of dehydrated beef jerky dog treat

Jerky is doggone irresistible to our boys, no matter what the flavour.  It's also one of the very few homemade goodies that our cranky old senior cat, Tiger, is interested in sampling. The dogs will very grudgingly share...hehehe.  Homemade dog jerky is very easy to make it is a great healthy treat option. There is absolutely no need to marinate at all - plain delicious jerky is our go-to meaty dog treat - but as we noted in last week's jerky post, by reader request we've created two quick and easy marinade ideas. Last week we shared our rosemary and ginger marinade and now here are the delicious details on our barbecue inspired blackstrap marinade.

Here are the delicious details on the first marinade.

Humphrey's 4th Birthday + Layered Lambcake Recipe

Meatloaf dog birthday cake with potato frosting, cranberry decorations, and candles

Woohoo!  Handsome Humphrey is four and all grown up. Where does the time go?  Did you see the impatient posers in my latest "milestone mugshot" snap?  Oh those rascals!  Sigh. Our Facebook furfriends and Instagram pawpals got a sneak peak at Humphrey's 4th barkday in last week's posts as we we took a month offline here on the blog to focus on recovery following Oli's health scare. And now, thankfully the whole furfamily is still together and we're back on the blog. And we have CAKE!

{RECIPE} Blackstrap Barbecue Meatball Dog Treats

Meatballs on a stone table with red bowls of spices and polka dot napkins.

Mmmmmmeatball treats! These treats aren't actually barbecued (although you could use your grill or pop one briefly to defrost while your making human snacks) but the meatballs are seasoned with BBQ sauce inspired blackstrap and herb/spice mixture to be extra doggone irresistible... although let's face it, my dogs would never turn down a meatball no matter how plain or how fancy it may be. Hehehe.

DIY Stamped Dog Treats (Plus Peanut Butter Bacon Bones!)

Bone shaped dog treats stamped with names and words

Santa Paws brought all sorts of interesting little goodies for crafting and baking (clearly the elves had read our post with Christmas Gift Ideas for Dogs and Dog Lovers) including a set of DIY alphabet cookie stamps. I have a number of cute cookie stamps and presses in my baking stash, including a set of larger letters, but these mini letters are perfect for using on smaller treats and are just the right size for my favourite bone-shaped cookie cutter.

{RECIPE} Bacon Bone Dog Treats with Pumpkin and Herbs

Homemade pumpkin dog treats shaped like bones

It is a rare thing for my poor deprived dogs that there would be bacon cooking in the house (I'm a vegetarian), so when there was bacon for one of my husband's grilling recipes, how could I not take a little and make a few special dog treats? Oli was still very vision-impaired in his cataract surgery recovery, but he could definitely smell the doggone delicious scents of sizzling bacon, baking treats, and...sniff sniff sniff....taste testing!
