DIY Custom Fitted Belly Band Dog Diaper

As with many things in life, making a DIY dog diaper was never something that ever crossed my mind, until it was needed. What would previously have seemed a little crazy (like my giant senior dog stroller) suddenly became perfectly reasonable. Tailoring custom-made diapers for Oli's comfort? Of course! Only the best for my beautiful old boy.

When Oli's occasional LBL escalated in to accidental wetting of the bed in his sleep (and after our vet ruled out any treatable underlying issues), we tried waking and taking him to pee in the middle of the night, but that didn't resolve the leakage. Beloved Oli was still welcome on all the beds, which we topped with waterproof protectors, easy care blankets, and other accommodations; however, he seemed embarrassed to wake with wetness and tried to lick himself and the bed clean. Not wanting Oli to feel upset or irritate himself with licking, we decided to try a belly band.

Using a Dog Stroller for Better Senior Quality of Life

Two dalmatian dogs on a walking trail with a large dog stroller

Life with a senior dog is filled with love, but also the sadness of watching them struggle or miss out on things that used to bring them joy.  When Oli started slowing down and retired from being my running buddy, we adapted to life by taking him on a separate walk if Humphrey and I were running.  As he slowed further, separate walkies become our daily norm. It's time consuming, but it gives both dogs the types of exercise they need and enjoy. Now the time has come to include a stroller in our exercise equipment for a better (and safer) senior quality of life. Here's the scoop on our stroller (good and bad) and adjusting to stroller life.

Humphrey's 5th Birthday

Cute dalmatian dog wearing birthday party bandana.

Our cheeky little weasel is a big boy of 5! Time goes so quickly. Our Facebook furfriends and Instagram pawpals got a sneak peak at Humphrey's barkday in last week's posts, and here are some photos from his birthday with the family and then extra barkday fun the following day with his bestie, puppy playmate super dooper Cooper. Here's all the details on our celebrations, with full recipes and DIYs to follow through the week.

DIY Reversible Cotton Flannelette Absorbent Dog Blankets

Elderly Dalmatian dog lying on a flannel blanket and waterproof bed sheet

This post is the second of today's special flannelette DIY double-up, first with a simple single layered flannel blanket and now our reversible double layered blanket . The same techniques can be used on very small pieces of cotton flannelette (or other absorbent material) to make washable reusable cosmetic wipes, "non-paper" towels, etc. or upsized for bigger sheets/blankets. These special blankets were made to be cute and cosy (of course!) but specially sized and created to use as a topper on our senior dog Oli's nightime bedding to help with moisture control.

Oli's 13th Birthday (Plus Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake!)

Elderly Dalmatian dog wearing a "Happy Birthday" bandana

Wowzas! Our beautiful boy is 13!  Thanks for all the social media love and birthday wishes you've shared with Oli for his birthday. We're always grateful to celebrate another milestone together, but after Oli's medical emergency last year and Tiger's recent passing, we've been feeling extra mindful and thankful this time around.  Now that our little blogging breaktime for Easter celebrations and ANZAC Day commemorations is past, we're back with photos from Oli's barkday and the details on our latest crazy cake: a doggone droolworthy surf'n'turf layer cake!

Humphrey's 4th Birthday + Layered Lambcake Recipe

Meatloaf dog birthday cake with potato frosting, cranberry decorations, and candles

Woohoo!  Handsome Humphrey is four and all grown up. Where does the time go?  Did you see the impatient posers in my latest "milestone mugshot" snap?  Oh those rascals!  Sigh. Our Facebook furfriends and Instagram pawpals got a sneak peak at Humphrey's 4th barkday in last week's posts as we we took a month offline here on the blog to focus on recovery following Oli's health scare. And now, thankfully the whole furfamily is still together and we're back on the blog. And we have CAKE!

{RECIPE} Banana Beetroot "Red Velvet" Pupcake Dog Treats

Red beet muffins on a blue polka dot table with a card saying "A party without cake is just a meeting"

These doggy muffin treats are delicious, dense, moist, and a deep dark "red velvet" shade thanks to a yummy (and healthy!) combination of carob and beetroot. We don't often do doggy cakes here other than barkday parties, but I couldn't resist working on a velvety red pupcake recipe and here it is in honour of our third blogiversary! Three years ago (after much encouragement from folks who knew about my crazy treats and toys) the dogs got their own blog and the makings of Dalmatian DIY were born. Thanks to all of you who have joined in our crazy antics along the way, opened your hearts to Oli and Humphrey, and been part of our blog and social media world. We look forward to creating and sharing more in years to come.

Dog Vision vs. Human Vision: A Life Changing Owner Learning

Dog sitting in the forest with colour, contrast, and clarity adjusted to show the image as a dog's vision might see the scene

👓 Don't adjust your screens...this is the same post cataract surgery walkies photo of Oli as shared in our cataract surgery post, adjusted to represent a typical healthy dog's view of the same scene.   When trying to better understand the differences between human vision and our dog's vision so that we could better assist our senior dog Oli with his post-cataract surgery visual deficits, I had a (long overdue) lightbulb moment that changed everything for us in how we approach our dogs' view of the world. I knew that dogs didn't perceive colour the same way as we did, but never understood the potential implications of dog vision vs. human vision and how I could use that knowledge to better support our dogs with visual cues as well as boost their general fun.

Senior Dog Love - DIY Emergency Dog Mobility Support Sling

This is not the most exciting or glamorous DIY post, but if it helps another dog owner at some point then it's totally worth it. As shared in our post cataract surgery summary, Oli's temporary vision loss meant that we needed a pet sling urgently.  We have steps at both entrances, so no matter what, potty time would require assistance and there was zero chance of finding one in our small city nor time for a special order. Oli is a big boy and lifting is no easy task. So I quickly made one with materials on hand while they were on the drive home from surgery.

Senior Dog Love - Oli Update - Cataract Surgery Experience

Close up of Dalmatian dog's eyes after cataract surgery

April is here, and this month is all about our beautiful old boy Oli who has his 12th barkday coming in a few weeks!  We are also passing the milestone of six months post cataract surgery and with any further visual improvements from here likely to be slow and minimal at best, it's time we shared a summary of our cataract surgery experience for those of you who have taken Oli into your hearts over the past few years of our blogging or those who may be facing similar uncertainties with their own beloved pets.

Easy DIY Holiday Scarves for Matchy Matchy Family Photos!

Smiling Dalmatian dog wearing a plaid scarf

I set myself the challenge this year of trying to get a furfamily Christmas photo.  Our dogs love posing solo, but are definitely not interested in posing together as you would have seen in a few funny shares here on the blog and our social media over the years.  Like typical kids being forced to pose for pictures by Mom, and all the more grumpy faces if they are (gasp!) forced to pose in matching outfits.  The horror!  Add the cat to the mix and it's total chaos.

Senior Dog Love - Oli Update - Vision, Mobility, and More

Before we jump back to fresh fun posts after our blog break and Humphrey's belated birthday bash, I'd be remiss if I didn't update our blog friends on our beautiful old boy Oli's ongoing health and senior dog struggles. Since it's too substantial a share for our usual Facebook updates, I've decided to share a quick update here on the blog.

Humphrey's 3rd birthday - can you believe that my baby is three? Happy (belated) birthday, Humphrey!  We love reading your birthday wishes, so please say hello in the comments or pop by our social media. :)  Humphrey's real birthday was during our blog break, but he still needed a special celebration and here's a peek at his barkday bash.  Woofs!

We're Back! Hello September, Hello Spring!

Dalmatian dog walking on a forest trail, sniffing at spring flowers

We're back! Did you miss us? Our August blogging break was a great refresh away from our blog, email, and social media and now we're ready for creating and sharing more fresh and fun new posts. Yay! And on the subject of fresh, it's also officially springtime in our part of the world! Bring on the longer days, warmer weather, and (hopefully) a little drier too after our very soggy wet winter.

Time to "Paws" and Refresh - Mid Winter Blogging Break

DIY dog crafts supplies and homemade treat baking materials in spring colours

This is our final live post of the winter before we take a little blogging break for the month of August. Don't worry though, furfriends!  In addition to all the doggone great ideas in our archives, we have a new post pre-prepped and scheduled to go live for you every Monday of the month, so check back weekly for fresh ideas. Being a small personal blog means that it is far too easy to work through weekdays, weekends, holidays, and fizzle out. Although I'll still be puttering around behind the scenes (can't help myself!), I will be making a conscious effort to take a break from blog world over the next few weeks. Time to recharge those crazy dog lady creative juices.

We're #WithNature - World Environment Day 2017

Dalmatian dog on NZ beach sitting beside driftwood shelter

Today is World Environment Day, and the 2017 theme is all about connecting people to nature, encouraging everyone to get out there, explore, and enjoy. One of the great (although it might not always feel that way at the time!) things about life with dogs is that we're always out and about for exercise, no matter what the weather. Dog's are great pawsonal trainers, aren't they? It is a miserable stormy rainy day in our part of the world today, but we hit the local beach all the same. Check out Oli with the cool driftwood forts - someone had fun building on the beach over the weekend!

Behind the Scenes: Homemade Dog Breakfast of Champions!

Make it in May! Our final post of this week's special mini series is a peek at our healthy homemade dog breakfasts.  It's not a treat, but it is something homemade that our dogs enjoy every day.  If you've ever though about switching to homemade dog food or mixed feeding (this is what we currently do), why not make this the month that you look into it further and see whether it might be right for you and your dog?  Mixed feeding is honestly much simpler and more economical than I thought before we made the transition, and our dogs are wild about breakfast. Their general health has also improved with our changes in diet - both bought and homemade.

Earth Day DIY Dog Toy Hospital Ideas for Longer Lasting Fun!

Dalmatian dog dressed as a doctor with a stethoscope

It's no secret that we love to spoil our dogs, but we're also conscious of our environmental pawprints.  In honour of Earth Day this Saturday, we're sharing some of our own DIY "Toy Hospital" methods for extending toy life for longer lasting fun as well as how materials can be repurposed before becoming waste.
