Homemade Birthday and Special Occasion Dog Cakes

Our current FAQs, Tips, and Troubleshooting mini-series is all about treats. We'll be diving into homemade cookie/biscuit dog treats when the mini-series resumes next week, but first we're talking cakes and pupcakes. Yum!

Recycled French Cuff DIY Dog Bow Ties

Dalmatian dog wearing a blue and white bow tie

When I cut old clothes apart for materials, I usually try to salvage as much useful fabric as I can, any miscellaneous items as I think may be usable, then relegate the dregs to rags and/or scrap.  After dissecting the recent batch of dress shirts (have you seen our recycled dress shirt pillow cases?), I was left with a pile of french cuffs. Whilst sitting on a stool at the kitchen counter and fiddling with one in my hand, a light bulb clicked. They were not only a similar size to the rectangles that I would cut for making a bow tie, but also pre-stiffened similar to how I would use interfacing (or batting) in a bow tie. I folded one over and into an accordion. Sure enough, it looked almost perfect, except for the ragged cuffline cut. I decided to sew a test bow, and loved it so much I may have gotten a little carried away making bows...

No-Sew DIY Dog Bows and Bow Ties

Dalmatian dog wearing a blue check bow tie with silver ribbons

Whilst making my no-sew recycled dress shirt dog bandanas, I couldn't resist making a bow with some of the extra material. Bows and/or bow ties are quick crafts, although attachments for dog collars can sometimes be a little trickier. We have some awesome bow tie projects coming up (including what may be my favourite upcycle thus far!), but to keep this bow project totally now-sew, we'll be showing a couple of simple attachment options.

{RECIPE} Beef and Carrot Meatball Puppy Party Snacks

Homemade meatball dog treats on a birthday party buffet table

I have a tendency to go a bit (just a wee little bit...) overboard on birthdays. Haha! My package of beef was bigger than needed for the turf layer of the Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake and I already had pre-cooked ground beef on hand in the freezer so in an effort to be slightly practical, I baked dog-friendly meatballs with the extra beef instead.  Meatballs are quick to make, easy to handle/serve, freezer friendly, and can be defrosted as individual extra special treats or used to top/crumble onto food. Since carrots are Humphrey's favourite veggie, I included some grated carrot in his birthday meatball mix.

{RECIPE} Fish Bone Dog Treats (Made with Fresh Fish)

Homemade bone shaped dog treats and party hats at dog birthday party.

When I make fish treats, I usually use a water-packed tinned fish for dough and fresh fish for special treats like jerky, but since I already had a fishy food processor to clean and more fish than was needed for the surf layer of the Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake, I decided to experiment. When I use meat/fish in baked treats, it's also usually already in ready to serve form, whether tinned or precooked and chopped, so I adjusted my baking methods somewhat for these treats to cook a little longer and slower than my usual quick bake and (optional) dehydrate.

DIY Squeaky Sprinkle Cake "Birthday Bonenut" Bone Dog Toys

Stuffed dog toys shaped like bones with birthday cake icing and sprinkles.

Humphrey loves his squeakies and it has been a while since I made a new stuffed toy for his toy stash, so for his birthday I made two new little softies shaped like bone birthday cakes with rainbow sprinkles. They were nicknamed "bonenuts" for looking like sprinkle donuts in bone shape. Hehehe... They're a cross between Humphrey's old "Love Bone" DIY squeaky dog toy  and his monogram "H" DIY sprinkle donut dog toy, and he was a very happy little birthday boy with new toys.

DIY Personalised Dog Party (or Anytime!) Bandanas

Dalmatian dogs wearing personalised birthday party bandanas

Oh those faces! I love these two cuties to bits, but like most siblings, they are suitably unimpressed when Mom dresses then in matching outfits for a posed photo. Haha! I refer to them as milestone mugshots. Our boys still have their reversible birthday dog bandanas (love these!), but I made new any-occasion personalised bandanas and created an extra for Humphrey's new little (no longer so little) bestie, puppy pal Cooper.

{RECIPE} Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake with Potato Frosting

Homemade dog birthday cake with frosting, sprinkles, and candles.

The dogs were beyond excited with all of the smells whilst this birthday cake was being prepared, but be forewarned that you may want to have the windows open, weather permitting! Haha! And don't get me started on the fridge after I made the error of popping the finished cake uncovered into the fridge temporarily.

Humphrey's 5th Birthday

Cute dalmatian dog wearing birthday party bandana.

Our cheeky little weasel is a big boy of 5! Time goes so quickly. Our Facebook furfriends and Instagram pawpals got a sneak peak at Humphrey's barkday in last week's posts, and here are some photos from his birthday with the family and then extra barkday fun the following day with his bestie, puppy playmate super dooper Cooper. Here's all the details on our celebrations, with full recipes and DIYs to follow through the week.

Oli's 13th Birthday (Plus Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake!)

Elderly Dalmatian dog wearing a "Happy Birthday" bandana

Wowzas! Our beautiful boy is 13!  Thanks for all the social media love and birthday wishes you've shared with Oli for his birthday. We're always grateful to celebrate another milestone together, but after Oli's medical emergency last year and Tiger's recent passing, we've been feeling extra mindful and thankful this time around.  Now that our little blogging breaktime for Easter celebrations and ANZAC Day commemorations is past, we're back with photos from Oli's barkday and the details on our latest crazy cake: a doggone droolworthy surf'n'turf layer cake!

{RECIPE} Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Cake with Blueberries

Small slices of blueberry dog cake on plates with dollops of whipped cream

This dog-friendly pumpkin and peanut butter cake is an easy pawty recipe if you'd prefer a more traditional cake or cupcake/pupcake to a meatloaf-style doggy cake. With yummy pumpkin, delicious nutritious blueberries, and a hint of irresistible peanut butter it is doggone droolworthy. You might even be tempted to taste test a piece yourself. We don't make cake treats very often around here - birthdays mostly, but also occasionally for special events and (of course) as part of our recipe development/testing. Whenever there is pupcake, our boys get VERY excited!

Humphrey's 4th Birthday + Layered Lambcake Recipe

Meatloaf dog birthday cake with potato frosting, cranberry decorations, and candles

Woohoo!  Handsome Humphrey is four and all grown up. Where does the time go?  Did you see the impatient posers in my latest "milestone mugshot" snap?  Oh those rascals!  Sigh. Our Facebook furfriends and Instagram pawpals got a sneak peak at Humphrey's 4th barkday in last week's posts as we we took a month offline here on the blog to focus on recovery following Oli's health scare. And now, thankfully the whole furfamily is still together and we're back on the blog. And we have CAKE!

{RECIPE} Banana Beetroot "Red Velvet" Pupcake Dog Treats

Red beet muffins on a blue polka dot table with a card saying "A party without cake is just a meeting"

These doggy muffin treats are delicious, dense, moist, and a deep dark "red velvet" shade thanks to a yummy (and healthy!) combination of carob and beetroot. We don't often do doggy cakes here other than barkday parties, but I couldn't resist working on a velvety red pupcake recipe and here it is in honour of our third blogiversary! Three years ago (after much encouragement from folks who knew about my crazy treats and toys) the dogs got their own blog and the makings of Dalmatian DIY were born. Thanks to all of you who have joined in our crazy antics along the way, opened your hearts to Oli and Humphrey, and been part of our blog and social media world. We look forward to creating and sharing more in years to come.

{RECIPE} Pumpkin + Peanut Butter Cake with Yogurt Frosting

Dog party buffet table with birthday cake and treats

It's not really a birthday party without a cake, is it? In the words of Julia Child, "a party without cake is just a meeting." and while we do enjoy meetings with doggone delicious snacks, barkday parties with dog-friendly cakes are far superior. :)  Our dog birthday cakes are usually meatloaf-style creations, but for Oli's barkday pawty this year I decided to make meatballs as a side and bake a "real" cake instead.

Humphrey's 3rd birthday - can you believe that my baby is three? Happy (belated) birthday, Humphrey!  We love reading your birthday wishes, so please say hello in the comments or pop by our social media. :)  Humphrey's real birthday was during our blog break, but he still needed a special celebration and here's a peek at his barkday bash.  Woofs!

Homemade "Unicorn Bone" Rainbow Marbled Dog Treats

Homemade dog treats marbled in rainbow colours (unicorn bones)

These pretty rainbow marbled "Unicorn Bone" treats were made for Oli's 11th Barkday Pawty last week. They are deceptively simple to make (and doggone delicious, too!). I promise that no actual unicorns were harmed in the course of our festivities...heheh... Don't let the colours deceive you - these are almost all natural thanks to some tasty healthy add-ins with just a teensy bit of blue food colouring (skip the blue if you'd like them completely natural). Here's how they were made:

{RECIPE} Layered Pumpkin and Beef Dog Birthday Cake

Homemade layered meatloaf dog birthday cake with number 11 birthday candles

Mmmm...cake!  It's not a real party until there's cake!  Our beautiful boy Oli turned 11 this week, and we (of course!) had to celebrate...and that meant there HAD to be a doggone delicious barkday cake!
