Recycled Dress Shirt "Pillow Daddy" Cuddle Cushion Covers

Dalmatian dog cuddling with DIY pillow case made from owner's old shirts.

No matter how many walkies we take or treats I bake, Daddy is our boys' favourite human. Over the years, when he has been away on work or other travels and they miss their Dad, I've been known to tuck one of his worn t-shirts into their nests. This was the inspiration for our patchwork t-shirt quilts (still in use) and when he recently sorted through his old dress shirts, I could feel a new project coming on! The ones that were unsuitable for charity donations were kept for my cutting table to be trimmed into usable parts, usable fabric, and workshop rags. Less waste, more use, more creative recycled crafting fun! I have some awesome recycled shirt crafts to share in future posts, but first up are our "Pillow Daddy" cuddle cushion covers in honour of Father's Day in our part of the world this coming Sunday. These pillows were made for our dogs to have virtual snuggles with their Dad, but the same easy DIY could be used with any special fabric and memory/relationship.

DIY Custom Iron-Ons with Two Colour Shadow Effect Lettering

Blue t-shirts saying "Dali Momma" and "Dali Daddy"

This post has been created in collaboration with our partner blog Creativity Unmasked.  With Mother's Day coming up in a few weeks and Father's Day not long after for those of you up north (it is in September here), we're sharing our custom heat transfer vinyl pet parent t-shirts. I made these first when I got my Cricut as a test for cutting size (little Dalmatian dots) and iron-on resilience. The bright blue shirts were bought as part of our dog vision walkies wardrobe changes, so they were the perfect target for some pet parent territorial marking.

DIY Paw Heart T-Shirt - Happy Father's Day from the Pets!

Paw print hearts made with colourful fabric markers on a white t-shirt

This Sunday is Father's Day in our part of the world and today's DIY is an easy gift for a furfather (or any animal lover).  It's very simple and can be easily customised to suit your pets and preferences.  Since we recently made the pets homemade t-shirt quilts and cushions so they could snuggle with their Dad anytime, for our Father's Day DIY we decided to reciprocate and make a jammie shirt that he can wear for virtual pet cuddles when away from home. Based upon my patience-testing experience of making clay pet paw print impressions and the probability of extreme inky mess, I knew that real paw prints were out of the question, so we used a very simple template method instead.

DIY Felted Wool Heart with Dog Fur

DIY needled felted heart made with pet fur from dogs and cats

With this post I have crossed the line into a true crazy pet person; however, read on my lovelies and you too may join me in the blissful madness.  This small pink heart contains a secret center filled by our pets - much like my own heart.  It is a simple craft, but does require a few special supplies, including a felting needle, wool roving in a colour of your choice, and (optional) a heart-shaped cookie cutter.

DIY pet paw prints in round pieces of air dry clay

Paw prints are a great way to celebrate special milestones or occasions during life together, as well as to hold on to mementos of beloved pets after they pass.  You can buy pre-packaged paw impression kits (which can be a nice option if you'd like a paw-and-frame set), or it's also easy to create your own custom clay pet prints with a few simple craft supplies.
