{RECIPE} Coconut Spice Beef Jerky Dog Treats

Homemade coconut beef jerky dog treats

Mmmm....jerky! Of all the (many) treats we make, jerky is one of the easiest and healthiest, and our dogs absolutely love it.  There is absolutely no need to marinate (straight-up jerky is our go-to meaty dog treat), but variety is the spice of life!  This coconut beef jerky is one of our "What would Oli do?" creations, combining some of his favourite scents/flavours with the always irresistible base of beef for a doggone delicious jerky treat.

{RECIPE} Fish Bone Dog Treats (Made with Fresh Fish)

Homemade bone shaped dog treats and party hats at dog birthday party.

When I make fish treats, I usually use a water-packed tinned fish for dough and fresh fish for special treats like jerky, but since I already had a fishy food processor to clean and more fish than was needed for the surf layer of the Surf'n'Turf Dog Birthday Cake, I decided to experiment. When I use meat/fish in baked treats, it's also usually already in ready to serve form, whether tinned or precooked and chopped, so I adjusted my baking methods somewhat for these treats to cook a little longer and slower than my usual quick bake and (optional) dehydrate.

{RECIPE} Naturally Pink Strawberry Cheesecake Dog Treats

Pink heart and bone shaped Valentine's Day dog treats on a polka dot background

We're back from our holiday blogging break and hopping straight into the goodies with our Valentine's Day post line up, and it's a berry-based treat for my berry-loving boys. May we all be as lucky to find a Valentine who looks at us with as much love and desire as Oli eyeing up a strawberry (or strawberry treat)! Haha! Look at this face:

{RECIPE} Strawberry Carob Christmas Spice Dog Treats

Christmas dog treats shaped like bones, trees, gingerbread men, and snowmen

In confession, I simply couldn't resist pulling out the plunger cookie cutters to make a few final holiday treats.  My go-to carob powder smells a lot like cocoa powder to my underpowdered human nose, but in flavour  it's subtly sweet, a little nutty, and sort of reminds me of gingerbread. (I've tried it in human baking....not taste-testing dog treats, although I've been tempted! Hehe...) With spice and all things nice on the brain, I adapted our strawberry carob recipe to make a treat spiced up with a hint of cinnamon, ginger, and the rich scent of blackstrap molasses. Cue the drool!

Yummy, healthy, and easy to make! These spiced apple gummy dog treats are quick and delicious. Like most gummy treats, they're low guilt at our place where the dogs absolutely love their gummy treats and we love that they are getting the health benefits of quality gelatin in sneaky "treat" form.

{RECIPE} Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Cake with Blueberries

Small slices of blueberry dog cake on plates with dollops of whipped cream

This dog-friendly pumpkin and peanut butter cake is an easy pawty recipe if you'd prefer a more traditional cake or cupcake/pupcake to a meatloaf-style doggy cake. With yummy pumpkin, delicious nutritious blueberries, and a hint of irresistible peanut butter it is doggone droolworthy. You might even be tempted to taste test a piece yourself. We don't make cake treats very often around here - birthdays mostly, but also occasionally for special events and (of course) as part of our recipe development/testing. Whenever there is pupcake, our boys get VERY excited!

{RECIPE} Pumpkin Pie Gelatin Gummy Dog Treats

Hand holding a layered paw shaped gelatin gummy dog treat over a table of treats

These treats smelled soooo good! Ridiculously good. I almost convinced hubby to taste one. :) I probably would have myself to be honest, but being vegetarian I'm not into eating gelatin.  I liked working with pumpkin in gelatin for our Pumpkin Spice Latte Gummies, and decided to play around with a fancy variation to create a special pumpkin pie inspired gummy.  The results? Doggone droolworthy!

{RECIPE} Marinated Blackstrap Beef Jerky Dog Treats

Dalmatian dog begging for a strip of dehydrated beef jerky dog treat

Jerky is doggone irresistible to our boys, no matter what the flavour.  It's also one of the very few homemade goodies that our cranky old senior cat, Tiger, is interested in sampling. The dogs will very grudgingly share...hehehe.  Homemade dog jerky is very easy to make it is a great healthy treat option. There is absolutely no need to marinate at all - plain delicious jerky is our go-to meaty dog treat - but as we noted in last week's jerky post, by reader request we've created two quick and easy marinade ideas. Last week we shared our rosemary and ginger marinade and now here are the delicious details on our barbecue inspired blackstrap marinade.

{RECIPE} Pumpkin Spice Latte Gummy Dog Treats

Dalmatian dogs begging for a bone shaped dog treat

It is springtime here in New Zealand, but every September our social media feeds still fill up with the tempting allure of pumpkin spice everything. Kiwis love cooking with pumpkin pretty much all year round and our dogs LOVE pumpkin, so I thought, why not create a PSL inspired gummy?

{RECIPE} Blackstrap Barbecue Meatball Dog Treats

Meatballs on a stone table with red bowls of spices and polka dot napkins.

Mmmmmmeatball treats! These treats aren't actually barbecued (although you could use your grill or pop one briefly to defrost while your making human snacks) but the meatballs are seasoned with BBQ sauce inspired blackstrap and herb/spice mixture to be extra doggone irresistible... although let's face it, my dogs would never turn down a meatball no matter how plain or how fancy it may be. Hehehe.

{RECIPE} Blackberry Cheesecake Dog Treats

Homemade pink dog treats shaped like bones and hearts

Old boy Oli is an absolute fiend for blackberries. Our berry patch is in a gated area, but when the gates are open whilst I'm working in the garden, Oli is sure to arrive like a berry seeking bear bumbling his way into the bird netting hoping for a tasty nibble. Since antioxidants are a big part of our efforts to give Oli happy healthy golden years, his berry love is something we happily indulge in moderation. Blackberries are a powerhouse of free radical fighting antioxidants along with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Blackberries are also a vibrant dark purple-red inside their inky drupelets, and the messy stains on my berry picking fingers inspired me to use that natural colouring to create these Valentine treats.  Beetroot is usually my pink go-to, but Oli was very pleased to see blackberries on the menu. And with the irresistible tang of cream cheese? Drool!

{RECIPE} Peanut Butter and Molasses Christmas Dog Treats

Homemade Christmas dog treats shaped like gingerbread men and dog houses

It's beginning to smell a lot like Christmas, and these treats smell almost good enough to temp a few human taste-testers. A little splash of blackstrap molasses and sprinkle of spice jazzes up our smooth roll-and-cut peanut butter dog treat recipe with a gingerbread-inspired holiday boost of scent and flavour. That dough works so well for simulating a cookie-dough texture that I wanted to play with it for my new Christmas plunger-cutters (I couldn't resist buying them...) and it worked very nicely! Since we were making gingerbread treats, I used only the gingerbread person plunger from the set and creating some matching gingerbread houses.  Here's how they were made.

{RECIPE} Bacon Bone Dog Treats with Pumpkin and Herbs

Homemade pumpkin dog treats shaped like bones

It is a rare thing for my poor deprived dogs that there would be bacon cooking in the house (I'm a vegetarian), so when there was bacon for one of my husband's grilling recipes, how could I not take a little and make a few special dog treats? Oli was still very vision-impaired in his cataract surgery recovery, but he could definitely smell the doggone delicious scents of sizzling bacon, baking treats, and...sniff sniff sniff....taste testing!

{RECIPE} Tasty Turkey and Turmeric Meatball Dog Treats

Bowl of meatball dog treats on black and white polka dog napkins

Tasty turkey? Yes, please! We may not have a Thanksgiving holiday feast to plan in our part of the world, but any time of year can be turkey time. It's a dog's life indeed!  These simple turkey meatballs get a big boost of fragrance and flavour as well as added healthy goodness from their savoury seasonings.

{RECIPE} Turmeric Latte Golden Milk Gummy Dog Treats

Turmeric gelatin gummy dog treats shaped like bones

Both of our dogs have turmeric regularly, both in some of their homemade treats and sprinkled directly onto their food.  Sometimes this is sprinkle a coconut oil mixture (see this guest post for how to make golden powder dog food sprinkles) but often I just sprinkle a little powder straight-up onto their food.  We give a number of different healthy add-ins this way to keep things interesting with variety, but turmeric is a favourite of both dogs for smell/taste and us for its potential health benefits.  When Oli was heading into cataract surgery, I wasn't sure whether sprinkling quick-to-stain turmeric on his meals would be a good idea given we anticipated significantly impaired vision during healing. Oli is a very messy eater at the best of times (see our dog-friendly home cleaning tips) and I could imagine things getting rather nasty in a hurry: blind eating, stainy turmeric, white fur, tender face, Elizabethan collar...uh-oh... I decided to whip up a batch of extra potent turmeric gummies for his recovery. This an adaptation of our lightly seasoned and simpler turmeric gummy recipe, as shown in our golden gummy star dog treats,. Full of healthy ingredients, doggone delicious scents/flavours, and low-mess goodness. Yay!
